      Hi Marilyn;

      Thank you so much for reaching out.

      The colors you currently have seem wonderful. Think about considering them as your color palette; oyster, gray and teal.

      If your desire is to decorate with in a neutral color pallet, I would consider continuing to use these colors through out the room. Pick a dominate color and use this color in 60 percent of the room, the secondary color in 30 percent of the room and the final color in 10 percent of the room.

      In most instances the dominate color is used on the walls. The rug color could be either the dominate color or the secondary color or even a combination of the two. Don’t for get texture.

      I hope this helps.

  3. Rachelle Kirshenbaum

    Hi Deb,
    I need to make a decision and I do not know what to do. My entire dining room has beige marble floors with a black marble border, beige walls and beige curtains. I need dining room chairs and I am torn between buying solid velvet teal or indigo blue chairs, to add a pop of color to the dining room, or staying with black and beige more neutral chairs, and bringing in the blue in the accents (tablecloth, curtains, etc.) I am a fan of blues, but the chairs are costly and I am worried that when teal or indigo is out of style, that I will be stuck with 12 chairs with an outdated color. Please advise which way I should proceed and how to make the dining room a “wow” room. Many thanks!

    • Debra Wiggins

      Hi Rachelle;

      Thank you so much for reaching out.

      My first instinct is to go with the more versatile color. Then adding blue accents in table runners, art pieces and other accessories in the room. Adding lumbar pillows to the chairs might also work to bring in the accent color. This option adds more comfort and luxury.

      However, if you decide on the teal or blue chairs there are some alternatives.

      Consider reupholstering the chairs when you tire of the blue color. Before making the decision, get an estimate from an upholsterer. You may be surprised at the cost. Depending on the chair, sometimes changing the seat color can be a simple DIY.

      Another option is to slip cover the chair now or later.

      I hope some of these alternatives are helpful.

      Please let me know what you think.
